It is very crucial for the website to be up and running all time without any failure. Prometheus provides a feature of Blackbox Exporter that probe the endpoints using HTTP, TCP, DNS, HTTPS and ICMP protocols. If the exporter is setup with the Prometheus, you can scrape the services and see if they are up and running and can also set up alerts, or check the service health to avoid downtime.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, in this blog we will see how to deploy and configure the blackbox exporter onto a linux server. Also we will be configuring it with Prometheus to monitor the availability of website and create alerts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prerequisites<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n
    \n
  • A Linux Server with sudo level access (Monitoring Server)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Server size will be depending on the load of monitoring.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Prometheus installed and running on Monitoring server
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Grafana installed and running on Monitoring server<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Basic linux command and networking understanding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Step 1\u2002– Installing Blackbox Exporter<\/span><\/h1>\n

    Firstly, let see how to deploy and expose Blackbox Exporter.<\/span><\/p>\n

    1.1\u2002Add a User for Blackbox Exporter
    \n<\/span><\/h2>\n

    For best execution, Blackbox Exporter should run on a special system user and it should be separated from the others:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1.2 Download the Exporter
    \n<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Now, download Latest version of Blackbox Exporter from the official GitHub releases using the command:<\/span><\/p>\n

    wget https:\/\/github.com\/prometheus\/blackbox_exporter\/releases\/latest\/download\/blackbox_exporter-linux-amd64.tar.gz
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    Unpack the archive using this command :<\/span><\/p>\n

    tar -xvf blackbox_exporter-linux-amd64.tar.gz<\/span><\/p>\n

    1.3 Move the extracted files
    \n<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Move the binary to a bin:
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    mv blackbox_exporter-linux-amd64\/blackbox_exporter \/usr\/local\/bin\/<\/span><\/p>\n

    Change owner to the Blackbox Exporter user that\u2002we had created previously :<\/span><\/p>\n

    chown blackbox_exporter:blackbox_exporter \/usr\/local\/bin\/blackbox_exporter<\/span><\/p>\n

    Remove leftover files:
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    rm -rf blackbox_exporter-linux-amd64<\/span><\/p>\n

    Step 2: Configure
    \n<\/span><\/h1>\n

    2.1 Set Up\u2002the Configuration File
    \n<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Create a configuration folder :<\/span><\/h2>\n

    mkdir \/etc\/blackbox_exporter
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    Now, create a configuration file:
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    nano \/etc\/blackbox_exporter\/blackbox.yml
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    2.2 Basic Module Configuration

    3.1 Create the Service File

    Create a systemd service file :

    nano \/etc\/systemd\/system\/blackbox_exporter.service
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    3.2\u2002Start and Enable Service<\/span><\/h2>\n

    sudo systemctl daemon-reload<\/span><\/p>\n

    systemctl\u2002start blackbox_exporter<\/span>

    Reload systemd and\u2002start the service:<\/span><\/p>\n

    systemctl daemon-reload<\/span><\/p>\n

    Check the status of service :<\/span><\/p>\n

    systemctl status blackbox_exporter<\/span><\/p>\n

    Enable the service to start at boot:<\/span><\/p>\n

    systemctl enable blackbox_exporter<\/span><\/p>\n

    Step 4: Integrating with Prometheus<\/span><\/h1>\n

    4.1 Modifying the Prometheus Configuration<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Open the Prometheus configuration file :<\/span><\/p>\n

    nano \/etc\/prometheus\/prometheus.yml<\/span><\/p>\n

    4.2 Add the below scrape job:<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Save the file and restart the prometheus service :<\/span><\/p>\n

    systemctl restart prometheus<\/span><\/p>\n

    Step 5: Configuring Grafana<\/span><\/h1>\n

    5.1 Adding Prometheus as a Data Source<\/span><\/h2>\n

    If\u2002you want to see the Blackbox Exporter metrics within Grafana, you can follow these steps to achieve that:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Click on grafana, go to data sources now you will see “+ Add new data source” <\/span>click on that and choose Prometheus

    2. now in this step, paste your Prometheus server URL and then click on save & test.

      5.2 Create a Custom Dashboard<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Grafana provides pre-built dashboards but we can also create a custom dashboard.<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Go to Dashboards, and then click on New and then click on Import.<\/span><\/span>\"import\"<\/li>\n
      2. Import the pre built Prometheus Blackbox Exporter dashboard, This dashboard will use metrics from blackbox exporter to show the data.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
